Moving to France

From Switzerland to France — planned from the destination address

A family watching two movers wrap a sofa, the Eiffel Tower in the window

France is large, and you notice it when you move: Strasbourg and Marseille are worlds apart, in driving time and in what waits for the moving team on arrival. That is why we plan every move to France backwards from the destination address rather than from the distance.

In the old centres of many French towns the streets are narrow and the stairwells are tight. Where the lorry cannot pull up we work with a smaller vehicle or an outside lift. In Paris and other large cities, loading places are scarce and access often has to be arranged formally.

Because Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, your belongings need a declaration and an inventory list at the border. We prepare those papers with you before the vehicle sets off, including the proofs required for duty relief on used household goods.

Distances

Typical destinations, distance and driving time from Winterthur

The figures are guide values for pure driving time. How many days a move actually needs depends above all on how accessible the two homes are.

What is particular about moving to France

!
Narrow old-town locationsOld town centres have narrow access roads and stairwells. We clarify in advance whether a smaller vehicle or an outside lift is needed.
!
Loading place in large citiesIn Paris and other centres the loading place in front of the building has to be organised — otherwise the team arrives with nowhere to stand.
!
Toll roadsFrench motorways are largely subject to tolls. Those costs are already included in our quote.
!
Household goodsUsed household effects are generally free of duty when you genuinely move your residence, provided the conditions are met.
Process

How your move to France works

Movers carrying boxes across a bridge towards the Paris skyline

First contact

You tell us where the move is going and roughly when. That is enough for the first appointment.

Free viewing

We record the volume, the access at the Swiss address and anything that needs special handling.

Quote with a fixed price

Travel, crew, tolls and border formalities are included. What the quote says is what the invoice says.

Preparing customs papers

We put the inventory list together with you and say which proofs the customs office wants to see.

Transport

Loading, the drive and, where the distance requires it, the overnight stop — all planned in advance.

Delivery and assembly

Furniture goes to its place at the destination and is reassembled. Packing material we take away again.

Customs papers

These documents belong to a move into the EU

For genuine household goods accompanying a change of residence into the EU, import duties are generally waived. For that to apply the papers have to be right and the conditions met — among them that you have already used the items for a certain period and that you really are moving your residence. We check your case before the transport.

Common questions

Moving to France: the questions we hear most

How long does a move from Switzerland to France take?
To Alsace or Lyon a move is usually possible in one day. For Paris, Marseille or Bordeaux we plan two days, because loading and unloading in tight locations takes time on top of the drive.
Who arranges the loading place in front of the new flat?
We do, as part of the planning. Depending on the city a permit needs several days of lead time, so we clarify access as soon as the destination address is settled.
Which papers does customs need?
As a rule an inventory list, ID card or passport, proof of the change of residence and the rental or purchase contract for the new home. We go through the list with you before the transport starts.
What does a move to France cost?
The price depends on volume, distance, accessibility and extras such as packing, storage or cleaning. After the viewing you receive a fixed price — tolls and travel costs are included.
Do you also transport pianos or heavy furniture abroad?
Yes. For pianos, safes and other heavy goods we have the experience and the right equipment; such pieces are planned into the transport separately.
Can you help with the packing?
On request we pack completely or supply the material only. On long routes professional packing is particularly worthwhile, because the load is on the road for longer.
How early should I book a move to France?
Four to eight weeks ahead. In Paris and other large cities the permit for the loading place needs lead time, and the customs papers want to be put together calmly.
Do you also do the final cleaning of the Swiss flat?
Yes, on request with a handover guarantee. If anything is criticised at the handover we clean again at no cost — even if you are already in France.
