When a gap opens between moving out and moving in

The old flat is given notice for the end of the month, the new one only becomes free six weeks later. Or the renovation takes longer than planned and half the living room is in the way. That is exactly what our warehouse in Winterthur is for: your furniture and boxes stand dry, monitored and fully insured until you need them again.

Gerber Transport has been storing goods for as long as we have been moving them — and usually the two belong together. We collect your belongings on the same run as the move, record every item and deliver it later to the new address. You have one contact person for move and storage, one quote and one appointment instead of three.

Storage starts at one week. Whether that turns into a month or two years you decide as you go: if moving in is postponed, we extend the storage period without you having to set anything up again.

How much space do you actually need?

Storage space is calculated in cubic metres, and most people overestimate their own belongings. The guide values below show roughly what to expect — the actual measurement happens at the free viewing, and you only pay for the space genuinely used.

Cellar compartment, a few boxes
2–5 m³
1-room flat
8–12 m³
2.5-room flat
15–22 m³
3.5-room flat
25–35 m³
4.5-room flat or house
35–50 m³
Office with 4 workstations
10–15 m³

A rule of thumb from practice: a well-packed moving box holds roughly 0.07 m³, a dismantled two-door wardrobe roughly 1.5 m³. Sorting things out before storage saves money every single month — whatever can go, we dispose of properly straight away.

2 Situations

When storage is worth it

Hardly anyone plans storage long in advance — it simply comes up. These are the six situations most enquiries come from.

Gap between two flats

Notice period and move-in date do not line up. Your belongings bridge the weeks with us instead of in a friend's attic.

Renovation or refurbishment

Parquet, kitchen or bathroom need empty rooms. We clear them, store everything and put it back in place afterwards.

A longer stay abroad

A posting, a course of study or a long trip: the flat is given up, your belongings stay here and wait for you to come back.

Clearing a household or an estate

When a flat has to be emptied before everyone involved has decided what to keep, storage buys time.

Office files and seasonal stock

Business documents, trade-fair stands or stock that take up space in your premises sit with us, ready to collect.

Selling before moving

An empty flat sells better. The furniture goes into storage until the new address is settled.

3 Process

How storage works step by step

From enquiry to redelivery there are six steps. Everything in between — packing, dismantling, transport, inventory — we can take on or leave to you, depending on how much you want to do yourself.

Enquiry

You tell us what should be stored and from when. Rough details are enough for the first appointment.

Free viewing

We record the volume on site and clarify what goes into storage, what stays and what can be disposed of.

Quote with a fixed price

You receive volume, storage period, collection and return as well as insurance in writing — no hourly billing.

Packing and inventory

Our team packs properly, dismantles furniture and records every item, so nothing has to be searched for later.

Transport and storage

Your belongings go into our dry, monitored rooms. You receive confirmation that everything is in place.

Access and return

Individual boxes by prior arrangement, and at the end transport back including assembly at the new address.

4 Comparison

Rent self-storage yourself, or store with Gerber?

Renting a storage unit looks cheaper at first glance. The difference shows in everything else: transport, material, assembly, and the question of who carries the boxes up three floors.

5 Preparation

What to sort out before storage

Tick these points off beforehand and your belongings come back months later in the same condition they went in. The most common damage does not happen in the warehouse — it comes from residual moisture in appliances and textiles.

Checklist before storage

  • Defrost fridges and freezers 24 hours in advance, wipe them out and let them dry; store with the door ajar.
  • Pack textiles, curtains and bed linen clean and completely dry.
  • Empty the washing machine and dishwasher, let the hoses drain.
  • Label boxes consistently: room, contents and whether fragile.
  • Heavy things in small boxes, light things in large ones — easier on the floor and on your back.
  • Cover upholstered furniture with something breathable rather than wrapping it in plastic film.
  • Keep important documents, jewellery and cash with you.
  • Keep your own list of what will be needed first — we put those boxes at the front.

What may not go into storage

  • Perishable food and opened supplies.
  • Live animals and plants.
  • Petrol, oil, solvents and other flammable liquids.
  • Pressurised gas cylinders, including empty camping gas canisters.
  • Paint, varnish, cleaning chemicals and pesticides.
  • Fireworks, ammunition and other explosive substances.
  • Cash, jewellery and original documents — those belong in a safe deposit box.

Not sure about a particular item? Ask us before the appointment — there is usually a solution, such as proper disposal instead of storage.

6 Costs

What determines the price of storage

We only name a serious figure after the viewing, because volume accounts for most of it. The levers are always the same, though — and two of them are in your hands.

FactorWhy it countsWhat you can influence
Volume in m³Determines the space occupied, month after monthSort things out first — we handle the disposal
DurationBilled per started storage periodGive a realistic period; extending is always possible
Packing and dismantlingWorking time and material before storageChoose a partial service and pack boxes yourself
Collection and returnTransport, carrying distances and access at both addressesSecure a loading zone early
Access during storageEvery retrieval means handling in the warehouseHave what you need put together in advance

What the quote says is what the invoice says: we work with a fixed price rather than hourly billing, and insurance is included. If storage comes on top of a move, we settle both in one job — moves start at CHF 560.

7 Common questions

Questions about storage in Winterthur and Zurich

How much does storage cost?
The price depends on the volume in cubic metres and the length of storage. We give a binding figure after the free viewing, because most people estimate their own belongings too generously. Insurance is included, and if storage is part of a move we settle both in one job.
What is the shortest period you store for?
One week. There is no minimum contract beyond that: if moving in is delayed, we simply extend, and you do not have to sign anything new.
Can I get to my things during the storage period?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us a day or two in advance what you need and we put those items ready, so you do not have to dig through the unit yourself.
How secure is the warehouse?
The premises are video-monitored and alarm-protected, and only authorised staff have access. Everything stored is fully insured, from a single box to a complete household.
Do you collect the goods, or do I have to bring them?
We collect. In most cases storage is part of a move, so we load your belongings in the same run and later deliver them to the new address, including reassembly.
What may not be stored?
Perishable food, live animals and plants, petrol, oil, solvents, gas canisters, paint, cleaning chemicals, fireworks and ammunition. Cash, jewellery and original documents belong in a safe deposit box, not in a storage unit.
How do I know what is in storage?
We take an inventory. Every item is recorded when it goes in, so months later nothing has to be searched for and you can ask for a specific box by name.
Can you also store business documents and office furniture?
Yes. Files, trade-fair stands, seasonal stock and office furniture are stored the same way as household goods, and we deliver them back when you need them.
