Private move

A moving day that is settled before it starts

Most moves do not become exhausting because too much has to be carried. They become exhausting because nobody knows exactly what happens when. We turn that around: before the day itself you know how many people are coming, what they start with and roughly when your flat will be empty.

Gerber Transport is based in Winterthur and moves people across the canton of Zurich as well as Thurgau, Schaffhausen and St. Gallen. From a studio to a detached house, with or without packing, with or without the final cleaning — you decide the scope, we organise the sequence.

What you see on the quote is what you see on the invoice. We work with a fixed price rather than hourly billing, so that a move which takes longer than expected does not become your problem.

The moving day

How a moving day runs with us

The times are guide values for a 3.5-room flat with a lift. For larger flats everything shifts later, but the order stays the same.

07:45

Arrival and a short walk-through

The team positions the vehicle, protects the stairwell and door frames, and walks through the flat with you: what comes along, what stays, what is fragile.

08:00

Dismantling and loading

Wardrobes, beds and tables are taken apart and labelled. Large items go into the vehicle first, boxes fill the gaps — that is what keeps the load stable.

11:00

Check of the old flat

Cellar, attic, balcony and garage. Exactly the places most often forgotten when people plan a move themselves.

11:30

Transport

Drive to the new address. On longer distances this is when the team takes its break — included in the price, not billed on top.

12:30

Unloading to plan

Furniture to its place first, boxes into the right room. That is what the labelling is for: what belongs in the bedroom ends up there, not in the hallway.

15:00

Assembly and handover

Furniture is reassembled and we take the packing material away with us. At the end we walk through the flat together.

Between the viewing and the moving day you have one fixed contact person. If something changes — a date moves, a wardrobe is not coming after all — one call is enough and the plan is adjusted.

Preparation

Room by room: what to do beforehand

The less that still has to be decided on moving day, the calmer it gets. This list covers what should be done in the days before.

Kitchen

  • Defrost fridge and freezer 24 hours in advance
  • Wrap crockery individually, pack plates on edge
  • Use up or throw out opened food
  • Empty the dishwasher and let the hoses drain

Bedroom

  • Move clothes on their hangers into wardrobe boxes
  • Use bed linen as padding material
  • Have the bed dismantled the evening before, or prepare it yourself
  • Keep jewellery and valuables separate

Living room

  • Books in small boxes, never in large ones
  • Electronics in their original packaging where possible
  • Label the cables or photograph them
  • Transport pictures and mirrors upright

Bathroom

  • Liquids into sealable boxes
  • Medication separate and within reach
  • Plan towels in as padding material

Cellar and attic

  • Sort first, pack afterwards
  • Register bulky waste early, not on moving day
  • Gather bikes and sports equipment in one place

For the first evening

  • One box with bed linen, towels and chargers
  • Tools for assembly within reach
  • Documents and keys in your own car
Costs

What determines the price — and what you can influence

We only name a binding figure after the viewing, because volume accounts for most of it. The levers are always the same, though, and two of them are yours.

The price includes the vehicle, the crew, blankets and load security, and the insurance. Packing material, cleaning, disposal and storage are listed separately, so you can see what each extra actually costs.

Common questions

Questions about a private move

What does a private move cost?
A move starts at CHF 560. The decisive factor is volume, then accessibility: floor, lift, carrying distances and how close the vehicle can park. After the free viewing you receive a binding quote with a fixed price — the amount on the quote is the amount on the invoice.
How far in advance should I book?
Four to six weeks is comfortable. The end of the month and the days around the Swiss quarterly moving dates fill up first, so if your date is fixed, it is worth calling early. At short notice we can often still help, especially mid-month.
Do you also move on Saturdays?
Yes. Saturday is a normal working day for us, at the same conditions. Sundays and public holidays are possible by arrangement, which is sometimes the only option in buildings with strict quiet hours.
Do I have to pack the boxes myself?
You decide. We can pack everything, only the fragile items, or nothing at all. Many people pack books and clothes themselves and leave crockery, pictures and electronics to us. Boxes and packing material are delivered and collected again.
What happens if the lift is out of order or there is no parking space?
We record both at the viewing. If a loading zone is needed, we apply for it with the municipality. If there is no lift, we calculate the carrying distance into the quote, or bring an outside furniture lift — it stays a fixed price either way.
Are my belongings insured?
Every move is fully insured. Floors, door frames and stairwells are protected before the first item is carried, furniture is covered with blankets and secured in the vehicle.
Can you take away what I no longer need?
Yes. Whatever does not come along we take with us during the move and dispose of it properly. That saves you several trips to a collection point and the bulky-waste charge.
Do you clean the old flat as well?
On request, with a handover guarantee. In Switzerland the flat is inspected before the deposit is released. If anything is criticised at that inspection, we clean again at no cost.
