Moving to Italy

From Switzerland to Italy — planned from the destination address

A family and two movers with boxes, an Italian flag on one of the boxes

Milan is closer to Winterthur than Berlin is: roughly 290 kilometres, over the Gotthard or the San Bernardino. A move to northern Italy is therefore often possible in a single day, while Rome, Naples or Sicily need several days and different planning.

The real challenge in Italy is rarely the motorway. It is the last hundred metres. Many historic city centres are restricted traffic zones that may only be entered with a permit. On top of that come narrow lanes, inner courtyards and stairwells that were never built for large vehicles.

We clarify before moving day whether the destination lies in such a zone, how close the vehicle can get and whether an outside lift is needed. And because Switzerland is not an EU country, your household goods need a customs declaration with an inventory list.

Distances

Typical destinations, distance and driving time from Winterthur

The figures are guide values for pure driving time. How many days a move actually needs depends above all on how accessible the two homes are.

What is particular about moving to Italy

!
Restricted traffic zonesMany old towns may only be entered with a permit. We check in advance whether the destination address is affected and plan accordingly.
!
Narrow lanes and courtyardsWhere the lorry cannot reach, we work with a smaller vehicle or an outside lift — that has to be settled before moving day.
!
Crossing the AlpsThe route runs over the Gotthard or the San Bernardino. If there are closures or an early onset of winter, we plan the alternative from the start.
!
Household goodsUsed household effects are generally free of duty when you genuinely move your residence, provided the conditions are met.
Process

How your move to Italy works

Movers carrying boxes across a bridge against an Italian city backdrop

First contact

You tell us where the move is going and roughly when. That is enough for the first appointment.

Free viewing

We record the volume, the access at the Swiss address and anything that needs special handling.

Quote with a fixed price

Travel, crew, tolls and border formalities are included. What the quote says is what the invoice says.

Preparing customs papers

We put the inventory list together with you and say which proofs the customs office wants to see.

Transport

Loading, the drive and, where the distance requires it, the overnight stop — all planned in advance.

Delivery and assembly

Furniture goes to its place at the destination and is reassembled. Packing material we take away again.

Customs papers

These documents belong to a move into the EU

Warehouse with labelled moving boxes for Rome and Milan

For genuine household goods accompanying a change of residence into the EU, import duties are generally waived. For that to apply the papers have to be right and the conditions met — among them that you have already used the items for a certain period and that you really are moving your residence. We check your case before the transport.

Common questions

Moving to Italy: the questions we hear most

How long does a move from Switzerland to Italy take?
To Milan or Turin a move is usually possible in one day. For Rome we plan two days, for Naples or further south two to three — the drive over the Alps and unloading in restricted zones both take time.
What is a restricted traffic zone and does it affect me?
Many Italian old towns only allow vehicles in with a permit. Whether your destination is affected depends on the exact address. We check it before the move and organise access or reload at the edge of the zone.
Which papers does customs need?
As a rule an inventory list, ID card or passport, proof of the change of residence and the rental or purchase contract for the new home. We prepare the list with you before the transport.
What does a move to Italy cost?
The price depends on volume, distance, accessibility at both addresses and extras. After the free viewing you receive a fixed price including travel, tolls and the border formalities.
Which route do you take over the Alps?
Usually the Gotthard, and the San Bernardino as the alternative. In winter we decide according to the current conditions and plan the detour in rather than discovering it on the day.
Can you store furniture until the new flat is ready?
Yes. Storage in our dry units in Winterthur, with delivery to Italy once the date is settled.
How early should I book a move to Italy?
Four to eight weeks ahead, and earlier for destinations in the south. Permits for restricted zones and the customs papers both need lead time.
Do you also do the final cleaning of the Swiss flat?
Yes, on request with a handover guarantee — practical if you are already in Italy when the flat is handed over.
