Moving to Germany

From Switzerland to Germany — planned from the destination address

Germany is the most common destination for moves out of German-speaking Switzerland: short distances, no language barrier and, for many people, a move to family or a new job. From our base in Winterthur we reach Stuttgart in roughly two hours and Munich in a little over three, so a move into southern Germany is often done in a single day.

What makes a move to Germany different from a move inside Switzerland is the border. Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, so your belongings need a customs declaration and an inventory list. We prepare those papers with you, so the lorry is not held up at the crossing.

At the destination itself, many German city centres are low-emission zones that may only be entered with the corresponding sticker, and on moving day a reserved no-parking zone is usually unavoidable. We arrange both in advance, together with the property management or the responsible office on site.

The figures are guide values for pure driving time. How many days a move actually needs depends above all on how accessible the two homes are.

What is particular about moving to Germany

!
Low-emission zonesMany city centres are low-emission zones. We check in advance whether the vehicle may enter or whether we reload at the edge.
!
No-parking zoneIn German cities the no-parking zone is applied for with the city or a service provider — with several days of lead time.
!
Registering at your new addressRegistration at the residents’ office is compulsory in Germany and counts as proof of the change of residence that customs want to see.
!
Household goodsUsed household effects are generally free of duty when you genuinely move your residence, provided the conditions are met.
Process

How your move to Germany works

Movers pushing boxes across a bridge, mountains and a German city behind

First contact

You tell us where the move is going and roughly when. That is enough for the first appointment.

Free viewing

We record the volume, the access at the Swiss address and anything that needs special handling.

Quote with a fixed price

Travel, crew, tolls and border formalities are included. What the quote says is what the invoice says.

Preparing customs papers

We put the inventory list together with you and say which proofs the customs office wants to see.

Transport

Loading, the drive and, where the distance requires it, the overnight stop — all planned in advance.

Delivery and assembly

Furniture goes to its place at the destination and is reassembled. Packing material we take away again.

Customs papers

These documents belong to a move into the EU

For genuine household goods accompanying a change of residence into the EU, import duties are generally waived. For that to apply the papers have to be right and the conditions met — among them that you have already used the items for a certain period and that you really are moving your residence. We check your case before the transport.

Common questions

Moving to Germany: the questions we hear most

How long does a move from Switzerland to Germany take?
Into southern Germany — Stuttgart, Munich or Freiburg — a move is usually done in one day. For destinations such as Berlin or Hamburg we plan two days. What decides it is less the distance than how accessible the two flats are.
Which papers does customs need?
As a rule an inventory list of your belongings, your ID card or passport, proof of the change of residence — deregistration in Switzerland and registration in Germany — and the rental contract for the new flat. We tell you in good time what is needed in your case and prepare the list with you.
Do I have to pay duty on my furniture?
Used household goods accompanying a genuine change of residence into the EU are in principle exempt from import duties. The exemption is tied to conditions, among them how long you used the items before the move. We point out the ones that matter in your case.
What does a move to Germany cost?
The price depends on volume, distance, how accessible both flats are and any extra services. After the free viewing you receive a quote with a fixed-price guarantee — including travel, crew and border formalities.
Is my furniture insured for the whole route?
Yes. The insurance cover applies to the entire transport, not only as far as the border.
Can you store furniture temporarily?
Yes. If the new flat is not free yet, we store your belongings in our dry units and deliver them later.
How early should I book a move to Germany?
Four to eight weeks ahead is ideal, because the loading place at the destination and the customs papers can then be prepared without rushing. Short-notice dates we check through the express request.
Do you also do the final cleaning of the Swiss flat?
Yes, on request with a handover guarantee. That is practical, because by the time the flat is handed over you are usually already in Germany.
