Televisions, computers, game consoles and household appliances are among the most sensitive items when moving. If packaged incorrectly, there is a risk of scratches, breakages or data loss. We'll show you how professionals prepare electronics for transport — safely, in a structured manner and without unpleasant surprises.
Modern households are packed with electronic devices — from large flat-screen TVs to desktop PCs to sensitive hi-fi systems, game consoles and smart household appliances. All of these devices have one thing in common: they are valuable, sensitive and rarely forgive mistakes during transportation.
A television that is improperly transported may arrive with a broken display. A computer that falls over during loading could suffer data loss or hardware damage. An expensive hi-fi system that is in the van without protection arrives at its destination scratched or bent.
The good news: With the right preparation and the right materials, all of this can be prevented. In this article, we'll show you step by step how to professionally prepare your electronics for the move.
Before you even unplug the first plug, you should do one thing: back up all important data.
Computers, laptops, external hard drives, and NAS systems should be fully backed up before moving. Use an external hard drive, a USB stick, or a cloud service as a backup. Even if transportation is smooth, there are many situations when moving where equipment can be unintentionally damaged.
Smartphones and tablets should also be backed up — either via the manufacturer's own cloud or manually via the computer.
One of the biggest frustration factors following a move is cable chaos. Dozens of cables, chargers and adapters end up in a box — and no one knows anymore which cable belongs to which device.
Our recommendation: Before removing, label each cable with a small sticker or a piece of tape and a waterproof pen. Use short, clear terms such as “TV HDMI,” “PC Power,” or “Printer USB.” Store each device's cables in a separate zip bag and secure it to the device.
If you still have the original packaging for your devices: Use them. Original packaging is precisely tailored to the shape and weight of the device in question and offers the best possible protection. It is particularly worthwhile to store the original boxes for televisions, computers and hi-fi equipment.

A flat-screen TV is one of the trickiest objects when moving. The display is extremely sensitive to pressure, shocks and incorrect storage position.
Step 1: Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth before packing. Dust and dirt particles can cause scratches during transportation.
Step 2: Stick a thin sheet of foam or a soft cloth onto the screen surface — never tape directly onto the screen.
Step 3: Wrap the entire TV in several layers of bubble wrap. Pay particular attention to the corners — these are the most vulnerable during transport.
Step 4: Only transport the television standing — never lying down. A horizontal transport puts pressure on the display and can result in pixel damage or a broken screen.
Step 5: Secure the television in the van with straps or between sturdy objects so that it cannot tip over.
Before transportation, open the computer case cover and secure loose components such as graphics cards or large CPU coolers with some foam or bubble wrap. In the event of severe shocks, these components can be torn out of their anchors and damage other components.
Pack the computer in a sturdy cardboard box with plenty of padding on all sides. At least 5 cm bubble wrap or foam between housing and cardboard wall are recommended.
Laptops should be transported in a padded laptop bag or in a sturdy box with plenty of cushioning material. Never place heavy objects on laptops — even briefly when loading or unloading.
Tablets and e-readers can be transported in their protective case, but should also be secured in a padded bag or box.
Hi-fi systems, amplifiers and high-quality loudspeakers are both mechanically and electrically sensitive. Pay attention to the following points when packing:
Speaker membranes are extremely sensitive. Tape the speaker openings with a soft cloth or foam to prevent pressure damage. Wrap each speaker individually in bubble wrap and transport them in sturdy boxes.
Large amplifiers and AV receivers are heavy and should be transported in sturdy boxes with sufficient padding. Be careful not to stack any other items on top of the devices.
Large household appliances make special demands when moving.
Before transportation, a washing machine must be equipped with Transport safety devices be secured — these are special screws or bolts that fix the drum and prevent damage due to vibrations. If the original transport locks are no longer available, they can be reordered from the manufacturer or from specialist retailers. Installing these fuses is essential — without them, the drum can be irreparably damaged during transport.
Before transportation, a refrigerator must be at least 24 hours before be switched off and completely defrosted. Transport it as upright as possible — if it is on its side, compressor oil can get into the cooling circuits. After installation in a new home, the refrigerator should at least 2 to 4 hours stand before it is switched on again.
