Moving with a balcony and garden – how to transport plants safely

Anyone with a balcony or garden knows the problem: plants are a special challenge when you move. They are delicate, heavy and need particular care. With the right preparation, your green favourites reach the new home safely and undamaged.

Plants on moving day – underestimated and often badly handled

When planning a move, furniture, boxes and logistics take centre stage. Plants are often treated as an afterthought – and that is exactly what backfires on the day. Large potted plants are heavier than expected, delicate houseplants react to temperature swings and vibration, and garden plants need particular care afterwards to take root in their new soil.

It pays to move plants carefully – many of them have not only sentimental but also financial value. A large potted olive tree, a lemon tree tended for years or a mature rhododendron are investments worth protecting.

This article explains how to prepare your plants properly for the move, what to watch for in transit and how to make sure your green housemates come through the change in good shape.

Before the move: preparing plants properly

Preparation does not start on moving day but ideally two to four weeks beforehand. The earlier you begin, the better the chance your plants come through the journey unharmed.

Repot plants and reduce the soil

Where possible, repot large container plants into lighter transport pots before the move. Heavy ceramic or stone pots can often be swapped for inexpensive plastic ones that weigh far less. Make sure the roots have enough room and that the new pot has drainage holes.

Surplus soil can be reduced too – it cuts the weight considerably without harming the plant. One thing to remember: water a little less in the days before the move, so the soil does not push out of the pot under its own wet weight in transit.

Prune and thin out

A move is a good moment for a careful prune. Remove dead branches, overlong shoots and surplus foliage. A more compact plant is easier to carry, takes up less room in the vehicle and recovers faster afterwards. Take care not to cut too much at once – no more than a third of the plant should come off.

Deal with pests before the move

Check your plants carefully for pests such as aphids, spider mites or scale insects before the move. Taking an infested plant into a new home means carrying the problem with you – and possibly infecting other plants at the new address. Treat any infestation in good time, well before moving day.

Garden plants: what comes along, what stays behind?

Not every garden plant can or should come with you. It is worth making a clear decision here – and making it before moving day.

What can generally come with you

  • Potted plants of all kinds – olive trees, citrus trees, bay, roses in pots
  • Young perennials and seedlings in pots
  • Herbs in window boxes or individual pots
  • Bulbs that can be dug up and carried dry

What is better left behind or given away

  • Firmly rooted shrubs and trees that have already grown deep into the ground
  • Large lawns or beds – there is no sensible way to move these
  • Very old or fragile plants that may not survive the stress of a move

If you want to dig up garden plants, do it early in the morning and ideally on an overcast day, to keep the stress of direct sunlight to a minimum. Wrap the roots in damp newspaper or hessian and keep the plants cool until they travel.

Transport: getting your plants there safely

Avoid temperature extremes and draughts

Plants are sensitive to cold, heat and draughts. Spring temperatures are usually pleasant, but night frosts are still possible. Never leave delicate plants overnight in an unheated vehicle. If the move takes several hours, keep plants out of a closed boot and out of direct sun.

Secure and steady the plants

A toppled pot means spilled soil, broken branches and a stressed plant. Secure pots in the vehicle with straps, blankets or cardboard boxes used as props. Larger container plants can be stood on a flat wooden pallet or in a sturdy transport crate.

Mind the loading order

Pflanzen sollten als loaded last and unloaded first . That shortens the time they spend in the vehicle and limits the stress from vibration and temperature swings. Make sure heavy furniture is not stacked anywhere near them.

Empfindliche Pflanzen separat transportieren

Particularly valuable or delicate plants should, where possible, travel in your own vehicle – not in the removal van. That way you control the temperature, the vibration and how long the journey takes. In cooler weather, cover sensitive plants lightly with a cloth or a fleece hood.

After the move: let the plants settle in

The journey is done – but the work is not over. After a move, plants need time and care to settle into their new spot.

Choose the position carefully

Put your plants in a sheltered, partly shaded spot at first – even those that normally prefer full sun. Moving them to their final position in stages reduces the stress that follows the journey. After a week or two you can place them where they are to stay.

Adjust watering and feeding

After the move, plants should at first be fed less . The journey puts the roots under strain, and an excess of nutrients at this stage does more harm than good. Water regularly but moderately, and watch closely how the plant responds.

Gartenpflanzen richtig einpflanzen

Garden plants destined for the ground at the new address should go in as soon as possible. Prepare the bed or planting spot before moving day if you can. Good compost, plenty of water once planted and shady weather for the first few days are ideal.
