Moving abroad

A move abroad is above all a question of preparation

For a move inside Switzerland, moving day decides whether it goes well. For a move abroad, the weeks before it do: estimating the volume correctly, clarifying access at the destination, having the customs papers complete. Get that right and moving day is an ordinary transport — just with a longer route.

Gerber Transport carries out international moves from Winterthur and the Zurich region to Germany, Austria, France and Italy. You get one contact person for the whole job: from the viewing, through the inventory list for customs, to the furniture being reassembled in the new home.

Because Switzerland does not belong to the EU customs union, your household goods are declared at the border. For a genuine change of residence, used effects are generally free of duty — provided the papers are right. We go through that with you before anything is loaded.

Process

Six steps to the new home

First contact

You tell us where the move is going and roughly when. That is enough for the first appointment.

Free viewing

We record the volume, the access at the Swiss address and anything that needs special handling.

Quote with a fixed price

Travel, crew, tolls and border formalities are included. What the quote says is what the invoice says.

Preparing customs papers

We put the inventory list together with you and say which proofs the customs office wants to see.

Transport

Loading, the drive and, where the distance requires it, the overnight stop — all planned in advance.

Delivery and assembly

Furniture goes to its place at the destination and is reassembled. Packing material we take away again.

Customs papers

What customs want to see

For genuine household goods accompanying a change of residence into the EU, import duties are generally waived. For that to apply the papers have to be right and the conditions met — among them that you have already used the items for a certain period and that you really are moving your residence. We check your case before the transport.

Common questions

Moving abroad from Switzerland: common questions

Which countries do you move to?
Germany, Austria, France and Italy, from Winterthur, Zurich and the surrounding area. Each of those countries has its own page with distances, driving times and the particularities at the destination.
What makes a move abroad different from one inside Switzerland?
The border. Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, so your belongings need a customs declaration and an inventory list. On top of that come tolls, longer routes and, depending on the city, permits for access or a loading place.
Which papers does customs need?
As a rule an inventory list of your household goods, ID card or passport, proof of the change of residence and the rental or purchase contract for the new home. We draw up the list together with you before the transport.
Do I have to pay duty on my furniture?
Used household goods accompanying a genuine change of residence into the EU are in principle exempt from import duties. The exemption is tied to conditions, among them how long you used the items before the move. We check your case in advance.
What does a move abroad cost?
The price depends on volume, distance, accessibility at both addresses and extras. After the free viewing you receive a fixed price — travel, crew, tolls and border formalities are included.
How long does an international move take?
Into southern Germany, Alsace, Vorarlberg or northern Italy usually one day. For Berlin, Paris, Rome or Vienna we plan two days, and two to three for the far south of Italy.
Can you store my belongings in between?
Yes. If the new home is not free yet, your things go into our dry, monitored units in Winterthur and are delivered later.
Do you also do the final cleaning of the Swiss flat?
Yes, on request with a handover guarantee. That matters particularly for a move abroad, because at the time of the flat handover you are usually already in the new country.
